Is it safe to book shore excursions independently?

Most of the time, yes. The risk is not the tour itself but getting back before all-aboard, and that depends on the port: how far the sights are from the pier, whether you tender, and whether the tour involves a ferry or a long drive.

The buffer rule

All-aboard is normally 30 minutes before departure on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, NCL and MSC, but your daily planner is the final word. The calculator works out the latest safe finish time for your port.

Ports that need extra margin

Questions

Is it safe to book shore excursions independently?

Usually, if you leave enough margin. Ships do not wait for independent tours, so plan to be back at the pier 60 minutes before departure where the ship docks, and 90 minutes before where you tender, with an extra 30 minutes for tours involving ferries or long drives.

What happens if an independent tour gets me back late?

The ship can leave without you, and you pay to reach the next port. Cruise lines generally only promise to wait, or get you to the next port, for excursions sold by the ship. Some independent operators offer their own return guarantee; get it in writing.

What should I check before booking an independent excursion?

Where the tour picks up and how far that is from your pier, when it finishes compared with all-aboard, what happens if the ship skips the port, and whether the tour depends on weather or sea conditions.
